This information sheet is intended to clear up the misconceptions about what the Travel Soccer Program is and what it provides for the players involved.
1. What is the “NPYSA”?
NPYSA stands for the Northern Panhandle Youth Soccer Association. The NPYSA is the parent organization for all of the youth soccer leagues/clubs from Wellsburg to Chester. These include the Brooke County Soccer Club, The Weirton Rotary Youth Soccer League, and the Upper Hancock Youth Soccer League.
2. What is the difference between “Recreational” soccer and “Travel” soccer?
Recreational soccer is the introduction to the game of soccer. All players are encouraged to participate, regardless of experience or skill level. Travel soccer, on the other hand, is a competitive league. Players are put through a tryout and the players with higher skill levels are selected for their various age group teams. This translates into an overall higher level of play on the field which encourages the players to continue to improve their skills and development even further.
3. What are the age groups for travel soccer?
Teams and age groups are based on the players that try out. Currently, the Force Soccer Club is fielding 12 travel teams, ranging from U10 to U19. Boys and girls are typically placed on gender specific teams.
4. When are the games played?
Travel games are typically scheduled on Sunday afternoons. This is done to avoid conflicts with the recreational leagues in the area and to allow those that choose to attend religious services.
5. How far do we have to “travel” for Travel Soccer?
Half of the scheduled games will be played right here in Weirton. The other half are played in the greater Pittsburgh area. Most are within one hour from Weirton. The longest drive is approx. two hours (Uniontown).
6. When does the Travel season start?
The Fall session starts around the beginning of September and ends around the beginning of November. The Spring session starts around the beginning of April and runs to the beginning of June. There are usually 8-10 games per session.
7. How much does travel cost?
While the fee varies slightly from year to year, the cost for a full year should be around $400.00. This includes all registration fees to the various organizations and the entry fee to one soccer tournament of the teams’ choice.
**** Please note that the U10 thru U14 teams form in the fall. If these teams fill their rosters in the fall there may not be an opportunity to join that age group for the spring session.
8. Can my child participate in both the Rec league and the Travel Program?
Yes, players may play in both leagues at the same time. There are certain rules that apply to the number of travel players that may be on a rec team but the rec league concerned will handle that for the players.
